“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.” - Psalms 116:15 (NIV)
My heartfelt condolences to Imani and Brenda. You know how immensely proud your father was of you both. He could be tough, but he lived his life with joy and hope, being kind and serving others along the way. May God comfort your hearts and grant you perfect peace.

Mr. Radney used to call me “Chrissy from Oakland” and I called him “My Favorite Father-in-Law.” The first time we met, when he came to visit Imani at college, we had the instant connection of family. It was just the three of us—father, daughter, and best friend—sitting in the dining hall, laughing, talking, and enjoying ice cream into the wee hours. I remember feeling stars pour light on us, so easy and perfect were our greetings.
Laras and Imani are the kin I always prayed to find when I left California at seventeen to try my luck on the East Coast. Thank you for welcoming me into your family and transforming me with your love and affection. God’s blessings truly do exceed thought, prayer, expectation, and dream.

My friend, it is with sorrow I write this message, but I joyfully remember you. You were truly a force to be reckoned with. A God fearing man that I had many great conversations with. A one time boss who later became a treasured colleague. Know you will be missed by many who knew you. My condolences to your family...so happy you got to spend time with your grandson...the smile was everything ❤️ Rest well my friend, job well done

Laras has been my closest friend and brother for 52 years. He impacted people with his wisdom, compassion, intelligence, humor and wit. He knew history, music, politics, sports, and was a highly skilled respiratory therapist. Along with our many adventures, I will always remember when he flew to Colorado to support my family. He identified errors with ventilator tubing to the therapist that was treating my son who had a massive traumatic brain injury, which helped save his life. Rest in peace and love, My Brother.

I was saddened to learn that Laras had passed. We attended the University of Chicago together and had kept in touch over the years. Few Black students attended the school then and we were all pretty close. I know he was quite proud of his daughters I hope his memory blesses you. Afi (Stephanie) Scruggs
